Ever wonder what happens to old malls...ones that sit for a while before they are razed?

As a teenager one of my favorite places to go was Penn Can Mall. It was one of the best malls in the Syracuse area until a super-regional mall opened in 1991. So, I went sent searching for info on the old Penn Can (short for Pennsylvania-Canada due to it's location along Interstate 81).

Found someone who built a tribute page (they even registered the domain)...with video stills from the late '80's when they took a camera to the mall. Also included are photos from their trip around the "dead" mall. It looks like a ghost town.

Also...I found a page call DeadMalls.com. I'm pretty certain you can look up your favorite malls from your youth; they might be listed. After some searching it seems that a lot of the malls in Syracuse are dead or dying. However, based on the area population, there always seemed to be too may malls.

I'm sort of interested in what happens to old malls. It's nice when they can be re-used for other purposes. Little Rock purchased one and turned it into a police station and jail. Often other Big Box retailers will move in. It seems that Penn Can Mall has transformed into some type of auto mall. Most of the mall was razed but the anchor stores were converted into indoor auto showrooms (not a bad idea considering the Syracuse winters).

Wild, wacky stuff. As I'm sure your lovely wife can tell you, Park Plaza in Little Rock used to be a slightly creepy wasteland before they pretty much razed it and started over. I do kind of miss the outdoor waterfall and fish pond. Speaking of too much capitalism per population density, has anyone driven by University Mall in LR lately? When we were there, it looked like it was barely hanging on.

Hey Ken, I definitely miss you and the Whole HeeHaw Gang. Without getting into too much detail in a public space, let's say this shindig could have been over with after the first week as far as I'm concerned. Ten days to go! I expect some of you punks to go and eat Cable Car with me when I return even though you've been ODing in my absence. ;) And speaking of HeeHaw, are we still going to watch what is undoubtedly one of the worst abuses of digital celluloid in the form of the Dukes of Hazard remix? After many weeks of Big Important Films, I'm ready for some fluffy brain candy.

HeeHaw Gang? Not sure I like that designation...though I know you're meaning it to be sweet. We miss you too.

We have only been to Cable Car once since you left. I still cannot believe you're interested in the Dukes movie. I think it looks terrible. Just another show from my youth that, even though it wasn't good to begin with, will be turned into soul-less corporate marketing, poor writing, below average acting, and general disappointment.

Okay, then, the whole Algonquin Roundtable. Better? :)

You've got to get in the spirit of the Dukes movie. It makes excellent heckling fodder. Perhaps we should wait until it comes out on video and revive the Bad Movie and Chicken Tuesday tradition.

Yep, Mike. I guess with all the 'beautification' of Dickson Street, (Bootsy Ackerman can go to hell, for all I care) the rents got too high. At least, that's the story I heard. So they moved.

I'd think a name like "Bootsy" would at least be purgatory in and of itself.
